FRIENDS OF CRC NEWSLETTER

March 21, 2005

Friends,

Graham Booth has been working very hard to create interesting and exciting programs for our monthly meetings. Hazel Baskin and Doris Jelly have also been working hard to arrange a good luncheon at the Britannia Yacht Club for a reasonable price. Please attend future events to make their efforts worthwhile. If you have never attended any of our activities please make an effort to come to one before summer. I am sure you will enjoy the program and meeting friends and colleagues.

Future Events:

March 31: Radarsat 2 - Please meet in the Lobby of the DFL at 12:55 pm to view Radarsat 2. All Friends of CRC, their spouses and friends are cordially invited. We will meet those requiring an escort at the Guard House at 12:45 pm. (See separate flyer).

George and Phyllis will be joining us for lunch at 12:00 noon in the CRC cafeteria where they hope to be able to meet with past friends and colleagues.

E-mails Received:

Received the following e-mails on February 18, 2005:

Dear Mr. Sawtell,

My name is Rob Chambers. I am Jack Chambers' son.

I'm afraid that I have some bad news. My parents were vacationing in New Zealand recently when my father was killed in a car accident. Fortunately, my mother received only minor injuries and has since been discharged from the hospital.

My brother, David, has gone to NZ to bring both my mother and father home. We expect them back late Monday night. Although it hasn't been confirmed yet, we're expecting to hold a funeral service late next week, likely either Friday or Saturday, here in Ottawa.

I'm not sure how many people in your group knew my father, so I'll leave the information with you to pass on as you see fit. I will be in touch again when the funeral arrangements have been confirmed.

Sincerely,

Rob Chambers

Jim,

Thanks for this message. I heard about it yesterday from Jacquie Esterbrooks who in turn learned of it from Arvind Bastikar's wife Joan. It's ironical that Arvind, who worked for Jack at the Space Agency was also killed in a car accident last year on the 417 between Montreal and Ottawa.

Take care,

Mike Palfreyman

Jim,

What shocking news on a late Friday afternoon. I remember Jack quite well and I suspect he and his wife were enjoying a vacation in New Zealand.
So sad, I suspect that as is my case, many people will be shocked to hear the sad news.
Not much I can do at this end but my thoughts will certainly be with Friends of CRC related to this sad news.
Have a nice weekend Jim.

Raymond Provencher

Hello Jim,

Felt I should inform you of the following, upon receipt of my mail today I received a letter from John Colbert informing me of the passing of his dear wife Diane on the 31, January/05. In speaking with John this evening via phone he asked that I inform you and Friends of CRC of this sad and untimely event.

Regards
Arthur W. L. Bridge

By Donald McKinnon

Sponsored by the Friends of the Communications Research Centre

Thursday, April 14, 2005

at 1:00 p.m.

At the Britannia Yacht Club

Mr. McKinnon’s travels have taken him to Finland, Russia, Belarus and the Baltic States. While touching on developments in these countries , Mr. McKinnon focuses his talk on St. Petersburg and the war and its aftermath, including the 900 day siege of the then Leningrad and its effect on the Hermitage. His illustrated talk includes a brief history of Russia and surrounding states to 1917, the reign of the czars, the 1939 Stalin/Hitler pact and the cultural impact of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of communism upon the great cathedrals and other important structures.

Mr. McKinnon has been retired for a number of years after a long career with National Defence. Amongst other appointments, he headed up the Canadian SARSAT program and for some years before retiring, he was Director of the Electronics wing at DREO.
