“SEAQUAKES, TSUNAMIS and EARTHQUAKES”

By Sam Altman and Hugh Reekie

Sponsored by the Friends of the Communications Research Centre

Thursday, January 26, 2006

Commencing at 1:00 pm in the CRC Auditorium

With the first anniversary of the 2004 Tsunami still fresh in our minds, our speakers will describe for us some of the history of tsunamis and discuss the most recent earthquakes of major note including the 2005 earthquake in the Himalayan mountains of Pakistan and the famous Krakatoa earthquake of 1883.

The tectonic movement of the Earth’s crust which causes tsunamis (resulting from seaquakes) and earthquakes are illustrated along with a short video on the tsunami propagation phenomenon.

Friends will recall that Sam Altman first worked at CRC on the CTS Hermes program before heading up the Space Mechanics division while Hugh Reekie was for a longtime associated with the M-SAT program. Both are long-serving members of the Friends committee.

All Friends of CRC, their spouses and friends and employees at the Shirleys Bay site are cordially invited.

FRIENDS OF CRC NEWSLETTER
January 15, 2006

Friends,

General Comments:

Happy New Year.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s Celebration. You have probably had your fill of turkey and holiday goodies for another year and are looking forward to 2006 and a Federal Election.

This newsletter is fairly short as I have received very little input from the Executive and the Membership. Some members have been asking what they have to do to receive a new Friends of CRC badge and if everyone needs one. Charles Archard is looking after this and should have something ready soon. An Annual Report for last year is in the works and should also be ready soon.

The Christmas Dinner in the Private Dining room at CRC was well attended by about thirty Friends of CRC, their spouses and others. The meal was good, the price was right, and the talk on Interior Decorating was very well presented. A good visit was enjoyed by all.

Christmas Dinner:

The Annual Christmas Dinner was again well attended. It was nice to see so many old friends.

If anyone has any ideas for improving the gathering so that more of the old timers come out and also some of the recent retirees all suggestions would be welcome.

Deaths:
