“THE TELECOMMUNCIATIONS HALL OF FAME”

By Lorne Abugov

Sponsored by the Friends of the Communications Research Centre

Thursday, February 23, 2006

Commencing at 1:00 pm in the CRC Auditorium

Canada’s Telecommunications Hall of Fame is a national not-for-profit and charitable foundation to honour Canadian telecom leaders and to educate Canadians about the significance of telecommunications and Canadian technological achievements. Mr Abugov will speak to us about the goals and operation of the Telecommunications Hall of Fame and in particular its Laureate Program. His talk will include some videos concerning last year’s inductees in connection with which some CRC Friends were interviewed. Amongst the first inductees was Dr John Chapman, latterly ADM for Research, who sadly passed away while on a business trip in 1979. Dr Chapman’s wife Marian will be with us at our meeting. She will have with her Dr Chapman’s Hall of Fame award which she will be presenting to the Canada Science and Technology Museum as part of their permanent collection. It is anticipated that it will eventually be displayed, along with the other Dr Chapman awards, in the Building 74 lobby.

Mr Abugov, who at one time worked at DOC, is a partner with Osler, Hoskins & Harcourt LLP and the Founder of the Telecommunications Hall of Fame.

All Friends of CRC, their spouses and friends and employees at the Shirley’s Bay site are cordially invited.

FRIENDS OF CRC NEWSLETTER February 13, 2006.

Friends,

The draft version of the 2004/2005 Annual Report has been completed and corrections, omissions and additions are now being implemented, so it should soon be ready for final printing and distribution.

The new President of CRC is Dr. Veena Rawat.

At the last Board Meeting the newsletter was discussed to see how it could be made more interesting and informative. It was suggested that we start a new section, yet to be named, that would include names of web sites and the kind of information they contain. Many members use unique web sites to download information which many of us would find very useful. We are looking for members to send us this information so we could pass it along in the new column.

Another area which I would like to see addressed is one that would describe the work that is ongoing at CRC these days. I haven’t had the time to pursue this but if someone would volunteer to visit personnel working in various sections at CRC, and ask them to write a short description for the newsletter of the projects in their area. This could be ongoing and we would welcome the volunteer as a board member if they so desired.

Jim

I n this section we intend to keep variouis interesting "bits and pieces" from DRTE's and CRC's past. Contributions from members will be greatly appreciated.

Deaths:

We regret to report the death of Ron Cretchley, ex DRTE/EL. Graham Booth writes:

Ron Cretchley died on January 21st, 2006, at his home in High Wycombe in the United Kingdom at the age of 82 following a two year battle with cancer. After some years at DRTE/EL, Montreal Road, Ron returned to the U.K. in the late 1950’s. In his 2005 Christmas letter, Ron wrote that he had seen where he appeared in a poem about the history of the DRTE computer on the Friends’ Website. He wrote, and I quote, “we have a print-out of D.Florida, G.Lake, & Grant Duff, all of whom I remember well & with affection”. Those who remember Ron will recall that he had a philosophic turn of mind and a love of poetry. In order to share his poems, essays and daily thoughts, his wife Irene writes that their son set up a website appropriately titled www.thinkingpoet.co.uk. The family plan to continue to build the site. Those wishing to make a contribution to charity in commemoration of Ron’s life may send it to the funeral directors, Heritage & Sons, 33-35 Hill Avenue, Amersham, Buckinghamshire, U.K., HP6 5BX. Donations will be shared equally between the Children’s Society, the Salvation Army, VSO and Help the Aged.

Don Henderson and Brian Jones, both ex DRTE/EL, have also communicated with the news of Ron's passing.

That’s all for another month,
