"USE IT OR LOSE IT"
SOVEREIGNTY AND THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE
BY
DR. GEORGE HOBSON
Sponsored by the Friends of the Communications Research Centre
THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2006.
COMMENCING AT 1PM IN THE CRC AUDITORIUM
Under such recent headings as "The Cold Facts: why we must focus on Arctic Research"(1), "Stewards of The Northwest Passage"(2) and "The Great White North - a part of the Canadian psyche"(3), the Canadian media has been drawing our attention to this impending problem, potentially of significant magnitude. Our speaker, Dr Hobson, formerly Director of the Continental Shelf Project in the then Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, is well qualified to speak to us on the geographical, political and defence aspects of this problem. In addition, he will include some historical background and touch upon some of the notable incursions to date upon our national sovereignty.
All Friends of CRC, their spouses and friends and employees at the Shirley’s Bay site are cordially invited. As usual, we shall meet for lunch in the CRC Cafeteria at 12 noon. Our speaker plans to join us there.

We would like members to contribute to this column. I am also starting another column called "CRC Today" and am asking CRC personnel to let us know what projects they are involved in. Do you have any other ideas about things we might include in future newsletters?

Tour Write-up:
On Tuesday, February 28, Hugh Reekie hosted a two-hour tour of the Music Division of the Research and Information Branch of the National Archives. The tour guide was Audio Conservator, Gilles St-Laurent who led the group through the physical collection of 78's, 45's, LP's, cassette tapes as well as 16 inch transcription disks that were used mainly in the broadcast industry. The mandate of the Division is to archive any material that contains the work of Canadian artists, as long as it involves voice, arranging, composition, or playing an instrument. We were surprised to find an album set that was labelled Artie Shaw until it was pointed out that one of the band members was a Canadian
The tour ended in the studio that is used by Gilles to extract sounds from long ago from any of the media that were originally used whether they be wax cylinders or flexible disks that were used for promotions and included within the pages of magazines. He was able to demonstrate the 'before and after' sound when he applied his musical and technical skills to remove hiss, clicks and even coughs that had been included in recordings of live concerts.
