FRIENDS OF CRC NEWSLETTER February 16, 2007
“LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY”
BY JOHN BREBNER
Photographer, CRC Creative Visual Services
Sponsored by the Friends of the Communications Research Centre
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2007,
COMMENCING AT 1:00 P.M. IN THE CRC AUDITORIUM
John is returning to speak to the Friends this time on the topic of the latest developments in digital photography. John plans to include a focus upon the impact these developments could have upon the average photographic hobbyist or be adapted for his/her use and will include tips or suggestions regarding equipment, processing, display, printing and interestingly the application of GPS and Google Earth as a special enhancement.
All Friends of CRC, their spouses and friends and employees at the Shirley Bay site are cordially invited. We are hoping that John will be joining Friends for lunch in the CRC Cafeteria.
Future Events:
Thursday, February 22, 2007. "Latest Developments in Digital Photography" by John Brebner, Photographer, CRC Creative Visual Services.
Friends will be pleased to hear that Gerard Kenney, who was to be our guest speaker at our January meeting, is recuperating well after his operation. We plan to invite him back at a later date to speak to us on the topic of his latest book "Dangerous Passage - Issues in the Arctic" as previously scheduled.
Besides presentations on "Garden Landscaping" and a possible update on "SMARTscope" as mentioned in the January Newsletter, CRC Friend Dr. Jack Belrose has agreed to talk to us on the generally little known pioneering work of Canadian born Reginald Fessenden in telecommunications including Jack’s own work in proving the viability of Fessenden’s experimental designs that led up to Fessenden’s ground breaking broadcast on Christmas Eve, 1906.
Hopefully as mentioned last month we shall be able to engage a speaker on the topic of the International Polar Year at some future date. Also, as Radarsat 2 approaches its final testing in the DFL, and following preliminary discussions with Dr. Ahmed, D/DFL, we are hoping that there will be an opportunity for Friends to have a viewing of the spacecraft before its departure to the launch site.
Friends of CRC Badges:
Please note the new procedure for entering and leaving the Shirley Bay site:
NEW SECURITY PROCEDURES
In support of our goal of enhanced security monitoring and safety, a procedure of electronically "badging" in and out of the Campus will be implemented on Thursday November 23, 2006. Electronic access badge readers will be activated on the entrance and exit gates of the Campus. This new procedure will provide data as to the population of the Campus at any given time. This is extremely important in cases of emergency situations. It will also allow for improved accountability of visitors and visitor badges.
When entering or exiting the Campus, please stop at the posted stop signs and do not proceed to the badge reader until the vehicle ahead of you has cleared the gate. Place your access card in proximity to the reader and the gate will open ( the card reader has a read range of approximately 18"). Proceed to exit or enter. Passengers must also badge in by passing their badge to the driver.
Pedestrian traffic will continue to be controlled by the Commissionaires until pedestrian gates are installed in the Summer of 07.
We ask for your patience during this transition period. If there are any questions or concerns contact Cam McQueen at 998-2209 or you may contact Ron Mischook at 998 -5439 or Charles Venne at 990 - 8830.

Hello Don,
I have just retired from the Canadian Space Agency's David Florida Laboratory. I started my career at CRC, (June, 1971). At that time I joined the microwave group. I remained a CRC employee until 1989 when the Canadian Space Agency was formed.
I would like to receive the Friends of CRC news letters and maybe contribute once in a while. Also, I would very much like to be invited to the F of CRC talks and lectures.
With kind regards,
Jean-Guy

Hi Don.
Always great to hear from you and the Friends of CRC. I notice that Sam continues to be very active and interested in some of the latest issues and technology concerning the environment. Please be sure to extend my best of wishes to him and remind him of my fond memories of his level of enthusiasm and great conversations together. You may wish to note that after 35 years of service as of November 4, I decided to retire effective December 27, 2006. I will come in a few days around the last of January, February and March to oversee some of the contract files dealing with projects that will end on March 31, 2007. My last 7 years with Industry Canada in Halifax have been most pleasant and I certainly got a lot achieved with all kinds of great individuals from different private and public organizations throughout Nova Scotia. I wish you and the many Friends of CRC a most Happy Holiday Season. I'm not sure if Mr. Rush is still running the cafeteria. In the event he is, and if you happen to see him, please give him my best regards and remind him of the great memories I have of his cooperation over the years.

Hi,
Sorry to bother you but I collect military badges from Canada and have an extensive collection of over 6000 items. I ran into a few unknowns that I can't find any info on them at all. I was wondering if you could help me out in solving the mystery items? I believe one of them is from the Satellite Tracking Unit at CFB Cold Lake (coldlake 39). caf2 is unknown and scan002414 has been a mystery for quite a while. Lots of collectors don't recall seeing this crest ever.
For your leisure, you can view my web page at: http://jfchalifoux.com/
Editor’s Note: Photos of the badges included in the e-mail are printed in black and white on separate sheets. Perhaps some of you may be able to help Mr. Chalifoux.

I'm very sorry to hear that. When I first joined DRTE in 1952 I worked in the same group with Frank. For some time around then, Frank, 'Nick' Nickle, Des Gibson and myself, all bachelors on our own, used to have dinner every night in the old Plaza Hotel down town. At that time we were
located in the NRC compound on Montreal Road. That seems like such a long time ago now.
Since leaving DRTE in 1966 I have often wondered whatever happened to Frank and the others.
Regards
Geo

Gerald Poaps still speaks with enthusiasm and pride of his work with the CRC and has many stories to tell.
Now in his 90s, and in ailing health, Gerald is confined to his Almonte home for the most part. He would, I am sure, enjoy receiving email from members of the Friends of CRC.
He can be reached at poaps@sympatico.ca
