"Radio Waves Across the North

(Circa World War II)”

BY

Ernie Brown (DOT, retired)

Sponsored by the Friends of the Communications Research Centre

Thursday, January 31, 2008
COMMENCING AT 1:00 PM IN THE CRC AUDITORIUM

Having served in the Yukon in 1943 on a DOT Radio Range Station, Ernie Brown's curiosity about other radio services in the North at that time led to the accumulation of information used in this talk.

Ernie Brown qualified for Radio Operator 2nd class from the Canadian Electronics Institute in Toronto, in March 1941. He served in the Merchant Navy in 1941.

He served in the Department of Transport from January 1942 to December 1976, starting as a Radio Operator, then as a Technician in 1953, serving in Winnipeg Region until 1960, then at Ottawa HQ until retirement.

All Friends of CRC, their spouses and friends and employees at the Shirley Bay site are cordially invited. We are hoping that Mr Bigras will be able to join Friends beforehand for lunch in the CRC Cafeteria.

Future Events:

Thursday, January 31, 2008. "Radio Waves Across the North (Circa World War II)" by Mr. Ernie Brown at 1:00 p.m. in the CRC Auditorium, Building 2-C.

Jack Belrose awarded Armstrong Medal

Jack Belrose, CRC Emeritus Researcher, received the Radio Club of America's (RCA) Armstrong Medal at a banquet on November 16, 2007 in New York city. Martin Cooper, Vice President, Radio Club of America presented the Armstrong Medal to Jack Belrose at the 98th Annual Awards Banquet. The RCA's banquet was held at the New York Athletics Club.

where it has been hosted for the past 25 years. Andy Rooney, CBC News Correspondents for "60 Minutes", delivered the keynote speech. Jack Belrose along with former CBS evening news icon Walter Cronkite, received the Armstrong Medal.

Belrose was honoured to receive this award along side Walter Cronkite, famous anchor of The CBS Evening News. "Thank you for giving me the Amstrong Medal. When I look at it, I will think perhaps I did contribute something, rather than nothing, to the book of knowledge."

The Armstrong Medal, RCA’s foremost achievement award is named after its first recipient, Major Edwin Armstrong. Although not awarded every year, it is bestowed by the Board of Directors upon Club members who have made in their opinion and within the spirit of the Club, an important contribution to Radio Art and Science.

Jack Belrose joined the Club in 1992 and became a fellow Member in 2002. Recently, he was elected on the Board of Directors (2008-2009). Jack is the first and only Canadian on the Board of 14 members.

Jack Belrose, now retired, was director of the Radio Sciences Branch at CRC. He received the Award for his lifetime contributions and commitment in advancing radio communications. Jack Belrose had a 55-year career in radio sciences at the Communications Research Centre Canada and continues to work there as Emeritus Researcher. Belrose has written more than 150 papers and articles on the subjects of radio science and antennas and propagation. He is a licensed ham radio operator with the call sign VE2CV. Recently, he has been researching the history of radio and has authored several papers recognizing the contributions of Canadian born Reginald Aubrey Fessenden (1866-1932) to the development of radio.

The Radio Club of America was formed nearly a century ago, and could soon count among its membership the very best in the Radio Communications Industry. Edwin Armstrong, David Sarnoff, Louis Hazeltine, John V. L. Hogan, Paul Godley and Allen B. DuMont, to name just a few. The purpose of the Club is as stated in Constitution of the Radio Club of America : "To operate exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes and more specifically to study and contribute to the development of radio communication programs and provide a scholarship fund for needy and worthy students for the study of radio communications."

Major Edwin Armstrong made important contributions to the history of wireless. He is known in particular for four patented inventions. Two of them continue to underpin modern radio communications, wireless telecom and broadcasting. In fact you can read what he did on the medal itself. The inventions are named in concentric lettering near the edge on the metal’s face. In 1935, he was awarded the Armstrong Medal, which was established by The Radio Club of America in that year.

Subject: Gerald Poaps

Just a note to say that Gerald Poaps will be celebrating his 93rd birthday this April and still lives in his home in Almonte with his wife Lucy. He has many stories of the early days of the DRB, DRTE and CRC and enjoys telling them. He is very hard of hearing and in failing health, but his mind is sharp and his memories of CRC are still vivid.

He can be reached at "poaps@sympatico.ca."
