FRIENDS OF CRC NEWSLETTER
January 31, 2008

"WEATHER, CLIMATE AND TELEVISION"

BY MR IAN BLACK

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Radio and Television Meteorologist.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Communications Research Centre

THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 2008,

COMMENCING AT 1:00 PM IN THE CRC AUDITORIUM

Mr Black will be well known to many Friends through his regular appearance on the CBC Ottawa television program "News At Six" at which time he presents his weather forecasts. In addition he can be heard from time to time on certain radio programs during the day. Mr Black will talk to us about his interest in and knowledge of weather, climate and television. Those that have watch his forecasts will know that we will have a most interesting and informative talk from a popular and well qualified meteorologist.

All Friends of CRC, their spouses and friends and employees at the Shirley Bay site, including DRDC, CSA and military personnel, are cordially invited. As usual, Friends will be meeting beforehand for lunch in the CRC Cafeteria.

February Newsletter:

There were problems sending out the e-mail version so if you did not received a copy or received more than one copy please accept our apologies. Don Ross has all of the e-mailing addresses on his computer and normally sends out the newsletter but he was away this time and I did it. Don sent me the addresses but I had trouble getting them into an address book in a format that would work. If you did not receive a copy and would like one please e-mail Don Ross.

Future Events:

Thursday, April 17, 2008. Annual Spring Noon Luncheon at the Britannia Yacht Club. Details to be sent out soon so please keep this date open..

Thursday, April 24, 2008. Mr Ernie Brown will be returning to speak to us on "The Battle of the Atlantic" which he personally experienced while serving in the merchant marine during which time he was twice torpedoed. Friends will recall that Ernie spoke to us earlier in the year on the topic entitled "Radio Waves Across The North". This talk is very timely as it immediately precedes Battle of Atlantic Sunday.

CRC Friend Honoured:

Friends will want to know that Colin Franklin was recently honoured at an Engineering Institute of Canada Awards Gala with the award of the prestigious Julian C. Smith Medal that was instituted in 1939 to perpetuate the name of a Past President of the Institute. It is awarded for "Achievement in the Development of Canada". In his speech of acknowledgement, Colin remembered the important contributions of John Chapman, Eldon Warren, Keith Brown and John Mar in the context of the Alouette program. Congratulations, Colin!

Eldon Warren:

Apart from a back row appearance in one group photograph, pictures of Eldon Warren seem to be hard to come by. If any friend has a good photograph of Eldon, could you please let us know at crcfriends@igs.net.
